Apple’s iPad holds 89% of online shopping traffic

Tablets market has been very competitive lately with a large variety of Android tablets being released every month. Even with this growing competition, Apple’s iPad still dominates the online traffic with an impressive 89.28% of e-commerce website traffic which generates more money on a per-user basis than any other tablet platform.

Monetate Ecommerce reported its quarterly report for Q1 2013 to AppleInsider. The data shows that as of March 2013, Apple’s iPad devices accounts for nearly 9 out of every 10 tablets that browse online shopping websites. The report also shows that iPad users spend more money with an average order of $99.05. On the other hand, Android tablets took spends an average of $95.48.

These findings are from random sample of more than 500 million online shoppers tracked by Monetate, whose vendors include Best Buy, Frontier Airlines, Aeropostale, The Sports Authority, PETCO and many more.

We’ve seen the decline in computer sales since last year and consumers are buying more tablets to replace their laptops, which is why the use of tablets for online shopping is also surging. It has grown from 5.95% of e-commerce traffic in the 1st quarter of 2012 to 10.58% at the end of March 2013. Tablets are more popular than smartphones for online shopping as well. Traditional computers still has the biggest share of 78.99% as of the 1st quarter of 2013, but we’ll see that number continue to decrease.

As for smartphone shoppers, Google’s Android is the most profitable platform on a per-purchase basis, with an average of $107.14 per purchase. Apple’s iPhone users spend almost the same as Android with an average of $107.03 per online order placed.
